Craftsman Home
The owners of this 1909 craftsman home were unhappy with the modern fireplace mantel because it did not match the original woodwork in the rest of the home.
The challenge was that finish carpenters at the turn of the century always had their own set of hand planes with which to create moldings. Because they ground the planer knives themselves, molding varied from carpenter to carpenter and became the signature of the craftsman who made it.
Therefore, Hans had to create his own molding techniques (using modern-day equipment) to match the unique molding used on the banister.
He also wanted to match the grain pattern in the wood and was thrilled when he located a piece of old growth fir that had been milled in about 1910!

New Fireplace Surround
This fireplace had an original mantelpiece, but the columns supporting it had to be replaced. In building the new columns, Hans took care to match the original style.
